Poinsettia Pointers!
Widely used in Christmas floral displays, poinsettias are popular around the festive season and are typically used for holiday décor or as gifts to friends and family. No matter how you’re using your poinsettia this year, here are tips on plant selection, proper care and inventive gift ideas.
How to choose The most popular poinsettia variety is red, though there are more than 100 varieties including white, pink or burgundy that are available at Cub. A healthy poinsettia plant will have expanded and fully-colored bracts, or modified, specialized leaves, that are in proportion to the plant and pot size. It will also have dark green foliage and strong stems.
How to care To enhance the life of your poinsettia throughout the festive season, only water it when the soil is dry and allow it to drain completely. It should be placed in indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day in room temperatures between 68° and 70°. It’s important to avoid fertilizing your poinsettia while it’s in bloom, as it will stunt growth; only do so after blooming. After the holidays, return the plant to a sunny area, repot using similar soil and water well.
How to gift One of Cub’s experienced florists can help you dress up a beautiful poinsettia with a festive bow, fresh Christmas greens and ornaments, or adorn with glistening branches.
